Explore Darjeeling, Gangtok, and Kalimpong, three of the Eastern Himalayas' most popular destinations. Darjeeling is surrounded on three sides by Sikkim in the north, Nepal in the west, and Bhutan in the east, with the 8,586-meter Mt. Khangchendzonga towering over the northern horizon. The town is known as the "Queen of the Hills," and the popular Darjeeling Tea is named after it. Take a trip on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, which has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Railway. One of the most striking examples of Darjeeling's British Raj influence is the toy train. Gangtok, which sits at an elevation of 1750 meters, became the state capital in the mid-nineteenth century and has seen rapid growth since then. Huge government buildings adorned with traditional Buddhist symbols dominate the downtown area. People traveling to North Sikkim can also stop in Gangtok for a rest. Gangtok, surrounded by monasteries and orchids, is a true traveler's paradise. Kalimpong's location, at an altitude of 1250 meters, is perfect for a fun, relaxing getaway. Kalimpong orchids and gladioli are well-known due to the nice climate. The Kalimpong area was part of the Sikkim raja's empire until the early 1700s.
